Ridgevue Debate Guest Speakers

5th graders enjoyed a visit from a few members of the Ridgevue Debate team and Mrs. Drew the Speech and Debate teacher. They got to participate in a miniature version of a congressional debate. Students "wrote bills" and debated them. This was amazing to hear and they did an amazing job for impromptu debates! I was so engaged, I even forgot to take much footage. . . Check out a very short video of some of the hour long visit from the Debate team.

Last Day 3rd Grade

What do Legos, paper snipping, electronic wiring, and chalk have in common? They are all activities from our Brain stations. We also got to see the Birch Elementary Career Fair. What a busy Day! Check it out in the short video.

Last Day with Wonderful 5th Graders!

Watch out world! These 34 amazing kids are headed to middle school! This week we celebrated their last day of GT with lots of crazy challenges! Get a peek into our crazy day here!
Last Day of 4th grade GT! Wow! What a creative day! Check out these fun final products created during a photography scavenger hunt.

4th graders played with perspective today during a photography challenge! Check out the forced perspective photography. Many found out that it isn't as easy as it may seem!

Fishy Field Trip

What a great day for fun in the sun! Releasing our little fish, talking with scientists, touring the hatchery, and even fishing made for a busy, busy day!Thank you to Tyler and Karen at the Research Center and to our AMAZING parent volunteers! This will certainly be a day to remember! Check out video of our day.

Oh, Ode, You wonderful Ode, how dramatic you are!

Students showed their flair for the dramatic, exaggeration, and creativity as they wrote and published digital videos of odes.

Passion Project Presentations

After weeks of developing student projects, the class came ready to share their learning! From videos, live presentations, diaper polymer, to rocket science - I can say even I learned quite a lot listening to these presentations! These students will never fail to awe and surprise me!Take a tiny peek at the presentations:

Amazing mazes

After hearing the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, students used critical thinking and creativity to design their own mazes that were then joined to others to create some supreme labyrinths! Check out the aMazing fun!

Chess Fun

Thank you Mr. Arney!

We Love our Volunteer Chess Instructor! Thank you for challenging us!
Check out the video of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders enjoying the amazing game of chess!

WeDo Love to Tinker

Inspired by Daedalus and the idea of tinkering, and by Talos, possibly the first robot ever imagined way back in Greek Mythology - 3rd graders experimented with our Lego WeDo robotics kits. With some creativity, sensors, and programming, it was a very busy day! Check out some footage of our day in the video below.

Passion Project Progresses!

5th graders are hard at work on their final GT project! They were to design their own project. They must LEARN something, CREATE/DO something, and SHARE something. All projects are off to a great start! We have fundraisers for a cause, rollercoasters, novels, screenplays with costumes and props, science experiments, actual blacksmithing, and even animated animal battles! With 20 separate projects happening in class the class is alive with energy! It is fun to see how driven and focused the students are as they work on their self-designed projects! Presentations will be May 2. I can't wait to see the amazing things these creative kids do!

Squid Dissection

Smelly yet scientific describe our day! Thursday our 4th graders dissected squid and closely examined the internal and external anatomy. What an amazing experience! Thank you Mrs. Duerksen and all the parent volunteers that supported our young scientists!

Ozobot and the Sun Chariot

Students designed their own chariots for Ozobot today. It was fun to see the creative ideas from the limited materials. Next task: design the trek across the sky while avoiding mythological creatures. Check out some fun footage of the day here: Week 2 - Students finally raced their chariots across the sky attempting to escape the mythological creatures! Check out footage of the final race!

Peep Pursuit

Third graders were on the case of the stolen peeps this week! Luckily, we were in good hands as these sly sleuths were in pursuit of the peep perp! Our peeps (yes, marshmallow goodness) were taken! Evidence, interrogating the suspects, and finally solving the case took much of our day!

Fascinating Fish Facts: Did you know. . .

Last week we were lucky enough to have Mr. Trovillion, a biologist, join us and share some amazing facts about rainbow trout. 4th graders were so impressed, they created posters of something interesting they learned. Check out their colorful posters that are now hanging in our classroom for all grade-levels to enjoy.

Stop-motion Snack

Third graders had the creative task of designing a stop motion video on a class chosen theme: FOOD! Technology, collaboration, and a lot of patience was required to complete this task. Check out the compilation of animations in the video! Here is a small glimpse behind the scenes of the movie:

A Day of Exploration

This week 4th graders welcomed a real biologist into the classroom. Mr. Trovillion, our mentor for raising trout in the classroom came in and shared his experiences as a biologist and some truly fascinating facts about rainbow trout! We learned SO much from him! Students were also introduced to classification and taxonomy through an activity that had them sorting objects. Before it was time to go, we had an opportunity to glow. Actually we learned about bioluminescence and participated in an activity that had students trying to find their own species in a dark room, where the only language was light. (Morse code signals). See footage of our busy day in the video below.

Storybook Trials

5th graders have been "hired" to represent important clients. . . Okay - they are storybook characters. Can they convince a jury and win the case? We will find out next week! Take a peek at the students preparing for the cases.

Fish Goggle Fun

4th graders are examining the exciting world under the water. With our always fashionable ocean goggles students can see what the world looks like through fish eyes. By graphing results of the "hunt" students discovered what color is the best adaptation for the colors of fish. Ask your child what color fish they would want to be in order to survive the longest.
